If you are looking to make your driving experience as quiet as possible, there are several things you can do to work towards this. Many of the stock components of your car are replaceable, and there are often quieter components you can fit if you want to improve your performance, noise reduction or both. You could reduce exhaust noise by investing in a quiet performance muffler, or you may want to consider your choice of the best quiet tires. Just changing the type of tires on your car can make a huge difference in how much tire noise you hear inside the vehicle. But, how do you know which tires are going to be quieter than any other pair? Here are a few things to consider the next time you buy tires.

Wheel size and Materials
The smaller your wheels, the less noise you will hear. Basically, a smaller tire size will have less rubber hitting the road creating less noise. So, purchasing 16-in wheels make your car quieter than purchasing 18-inch wheels. It may be visually less appealing so you need to decide which is more important, looks or noise reduction. There are also some materials like soft rubber compositions that will also help to give you a little peace and quiet on your drive home.
Speed & weight specifications
If you plan on driving at higher speeds, you will want a tire that is created for that. However, that also means having a tire that is thicker which we already know means a noisier ride. So, tires created for lower speeds will give you a quieter driving experience.
Weather conditions
Some tires that are chosen for harsher weather conditions will be noisier due to certain safety aspects they will have. Studded winter tires for example create more noise. Summer tires, on the other hand, can be quieter but there are exceptions to this rule. Some of the features responsible for the extra noise include:
- The composition of the rubber tire material. Winter tires are softer, and tend to have a more course, silica type material in the mix to provide better grip in the ice and snow. They don’t last as long because the softer rubber will deteriorate quicker but that’s part of the deal with winter tires.
- The tread design. A winter tire tends to have a much wider space between treads. This is to aid with grip and debris displacement. If there is no debris though, and the roads are not covered in snow and ice, then compressed air in these wide canals can create a lot of ground noise. This is something that non winter tires don’t have to worry about as much as the canals between treads is much narrower. Winter tires are also designed to provide more traction and these designs also come at the expense of more noise in general on dry surfaces, but often less noise on snowy roads.
There are always exceptions that prove the rule. Nordic tires (also known as ice tires) run very quiet, as do Goodyear Ultra Grip and Continental TS830 according to many home tests. These do tend to be quite expensive tires though.
